W.T. Clarke’s students from Career Seminar and Reach HS recently went to the eVero Corporation's Outreach Seminar on Entering and Excelling in the Workplace at RXR Executive Park in Melville.
The students were empowered, and the presentation was done with the utmost dignity and respect for all individuals. The material covered focused on Communication and Pragmatics in the workplace for individuals with disabilities.
Students heard from Nanette Malbranche, the FedEx Managing Director of the Tri-State Area about interview communication skills. She even showed the students how to explore job opportunities in the FedEx company that are potentially available to them. As a bonus, she has shared her slides with Clarke, so that the school can review them with the students and help them apply what she presented to their skill set.
Then they had two presentations and a trivia game (many won prizes) by two individuals with disabilities who are employed at eVero. It was such a pleasure to have the students see individuals like themselves who have become successfully, and happily employed. Clarke will receive their trivia slides so that the school can use them to shape answers to potential interview questions, which will go in the career portfolios that Ms. Julianne Keym, Clarke’s Speech-Language Pathologist, is helping them create with their teachers.
Lastly, students listened to Bonnie Holtzman, the YAI Deputy Director of LI Day and Employment Services on social skills needed to keep a job. Ms. Keym is going to request her slides as well to help direct the pragmatic lessons she does in the classes with the teachers.
Clarke thanks everyone involved in their support in making this opportunity possible. The school looks forward to others in the future with the connections and networking they made through the seminar.
